A standard combination for managing heart failure. Pimobendan strengthens the heart while benazepril (an ACE inhibitor) reduces cardiac workload by relaxing blood vessels.
Why are these prescribed together?
ACE inhibitors like benazepril are often added to the treatment regimen alongside pimobendan, particularly at Stage C. While pimobendan directly improves heart contractility, benazepril blocks the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS), reducing fluid retention and lowering blood pressure to ease the heart's workload.
How they interact
No direct pharmacological conflict. Both work to reduce cardiac workload through different mechanisms, providing complementary benefits. Some studies suggest this combination provides better outcomes than either drug alone.
Dosing and timing tips
Pimobendan: twice daily on empty stomach. Benazepril: once or twice daily, can be given with or without food. They can be given at the same time if pimobendan is given on an empty stomach.
Monitoring needed
Regular bloodwork for kidney function (BUN, creatinine) - ACE inhibitors can affect kidney blood flow. Monitor blood pressure. Watch for lethargy or weakness which could indicate low blood pressure.
Important warnings
Do NOT stop benazepril abruptly
Report any loss of appetite or vomiting - could indicate kidney effects
Benazepril dose may need adjustment if kidney values change

Other drug interactions
Pimobendan (Vetmedin) & Furosemide (Lasix)
The most common combination for dogs in congestive heart failure. Pimobendan strengthens the heart while furosemide removes excess fluid from the lungs.
Pimobendan (Vetmedin) & Sotalol
Used together when a dog has both weakened heart muscle and dangerous arrhythmias. Common in Dobermans with DCM. Sotalol controls heart rhythm while pimobendan supports heart function.
Pimobendan (Vetmedin) & Spironolactone
Spironolactone is often added to the treatment regimen for MMVD dogs in heart failure. It provides mild diuretic effects while protecting against harmful cardiac remodeling.
Furosemide (Lasix) & Benazepril
A foundational combination in heart failure management. Furosemide removes fluid while benazepril reduces the hormonal response that causes fluid retention.
Important:Never start, stop, or adjust your dog's medication without consulting your veterinarian. The dosages and protocols described here are general references - your vet will determine the right approach for your dog based on their individual condition, weight, and overall health.
